Mahler Symphony No. 5

Approximate running time: 1h15 without intermission

The musicians of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra make a return visit to Paris with the conductor from Quebec who has been at the helm for almost a decade. An evening of Mahler and his wonderful, solemn Fifth Symphony in which the Dutch orchestra’s brass section will truly shine once again. In his film Death in Venice, adapted from the novella by Thomas Mann, Luchino Visconti brought the piece to prominence by choosing the Adagietto to express the hero’s inner feelings. The entire score is bathed in this wonderful nostalgia from start to finish. Mahler and Bruckner have long been two of the conductor’s favourite composers and he delivers them with uniquely personal precision and intelligence.
