Selling one’s soul to the devil, invoking a spirit, and firing a magic bullet are just some of the ingredients of the fantastical world of the first German Romantic opera composed by Carl Maria von Weber in 1821. This lyric opera owes a great debt to Beethoven’s Fidelio and prefigures Wagner’s Tannhäuser. In this musical gem, Cie 14:20, pioneers in the new magic movement, craft a visual and sensory setting which encourages spectators to challenge their own relationship with the invisible and the unconscious. To do justice to this cornerstone of the Romantic repertoire, a masterful opera of sensual colour and organic orchestration, Laurence Equilbey will wield the baton for the first time on avenue Montaigne, leading his Insula Orchestra and the Accentus choir. His interpretation using early instruments should convey every nuance of a score in which the demanding dramatic line is combined with striking lyrical expression.
